As a trumpet player, I feel like I am lacking when it comes to sound quality and would like to know if anyone has some tips or exercises on how to improve. I know that general practice and long notes can help but I would like to know if there are any other methods that other trumpet players have used to improve their own.

Thanks in advance
-Noah Fraser

Hello there. Well my first trumpet has arrived. I play guitar very well and piano ok. I don´t read music properly. Should I wait to receive my first lesson before I get stuck in with the trumpet. I mean, am I gonna pick up bad habits? I intend to play some exercises from this site and some I got in iphone apps. Just to get started, you know? I had been shown many years ago by a teacher how to place an embouchure on cornet which I seem to have remembered ok and I have a good ear for tuning. So I am playing around trying to play a scale and make a nice fat tone. I don´t want to blag my way on this beautiful instrument and hopefully get my sightreading do a decent level. Thanks a lot and sorry if I ask a stupid question!

Any tips what to do to get higher than Bb2 ? Should I play especially long notes and go f.ex. one tone higher every week? I have played brass instruments with lower scale and bigger mouth pieces before :) I know its important not to stress the lips too much even when going higher. Thanks for nice exercises too.

jjs, that's a nice initiative. Sure, it'll be useful for the trumpet lovers like me. But please excuse me if you find any grammatical errors in my posts as english is not my first language. And would you mind creating a seperate category that only talks about the exercises? Thanks

Hello, I am a new member, my tongue is Italian but with the help of a translator I will follow you and follow the arguments that you have treated and dealt with subsequently.
I studied the trumpet from a clarinet teacher 47 years ago and I definitely got a lot of flaws. I played trumpet in the band also significant overlapping of roles I played lead trumpet in several orchestras and also Flügelhorn until the age of 30 years. Then I left for work missed anything from a few months I started to study assiduously, spurred by the fact that two of my grandchildren have started to study music, a trumpet and the other the piano, I play with them. I appreciate the effort and patience that you used to enter all this information in making your site public showings of your knowledge is truly a beautiful thing. We will discuss this forum then welcome and thanks for the time being affected. Sorry if you have trouble understanding me, but you have lots of patience, excuse me, Colonel

Hi all!

It's been a while so I thought I'd share some of my thoughts with you (does anybody read these?).

As some of you may know, this site is my thesis, or a part of it, as mentioned in the about -page. Well, I have now finished the report part of the thesis so from now on this site is just a hobby of mine. I've had some very encouraging comments about the site in other trumpet discussion forums and I will definitely keep adding the exercises whenever I have the time for it. As also mentioned in the about -page, my goal was to create the world's largest online trumpet exercise database and it still is. There aren't many of those so this could well be achieved (but not by sacrificing quality to quantity).

Unfortunately my time is limited so I'd like you to tell what kind of exercises would you like to see here? A while ago I added some major scale mode exercises and I'm planning to do similar exercises for the melodic minor scale modes. Also, there are none of minor ii-V patterns, that's also next on my todo -list. Adding some more of the major II-V exercises wouldn't hurt either (btw, would you like to hear the chord progressions behind the II-V -patterns? There could be two audio examples, with and without the accompaniment). There are also still some empty categories (etudes, chord arpeggios, etc.) that need to be started.

We have a nice amount of members here (growing by few members a week). Still, very few of you have added any exercises here but that's ok. I'll take your membership as a support for this site so keep on joining! That way I know that people really use this site. There's one thing that you could help though: there are many (native) english speakers as members so if you see any grammar errors (I'm sure there are!), please correct them if you have the time.
