Hi I'm new here but have been playing since I was 12 and I'm now much older… RE the use of low register to improve high register I think it is vital. According to one of my university trumpet teachers you use the same embouchure muscles to control the sound in low and pedal register that you do in the altissimo. I agree with jjs that you need to focus on all registers so that you have a powerful balanced sound everywhere on your horn.

Hi and sorry about the late reply!

Yes, some say that the pedal tones are important when improving high register. Personally I think that it's important to gently expand your register in both directions but not by sacrificing the middle register tone quality. That's the register you'll mostly use anyway. Long tones are good for this. If you're interested in improving your high register, you might want to check out the Carmine Caruso -method.

I use pedal tones mostly for recovering when practising. They relax the lips nicely.

These are only my personal opinions and the best way is to study the different approaches and choose the one that works for you the best.

Hi everybody! I have one question for you. Do you think that the pedal tones are very important for the development of the high register? First of all, JAMES STAMP book? Is there some other way (easier than J.Stamp) to get the high register?
I currently exercise this ''system'' but I'm interested if there is something else which might be better than this? What you think?

Big salute!!!

Hi MeanSean!

Yes, this is correct. As you kind of stated in the title your post, the trumpet is a bb -tuned instrument (there are others, but this is the most common). Here's a quite good explanation: http://library.thinkquest.org/10693/Bb.html

So, if you play from a concert pitch sheet, you'll have to traspose everything a whole step up.

I just bought a used trumpet a week ago. I already play guitar quite well and I want to start playing a brass instrument. So I have been practicing about an hour or 2 a day and I have progressed quickly. So last night I went to jam with a keyboard player and I brought my trumpet along for kicks. On the pdf with all the note fingerings that is on this website it says that to play a C note, the position is open. I found that in-fact I was playing a Bb. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong?

Indeed it is the vibration or buzz that you hear on the lips but the sound comes out like rasp sound. But if you removed the mouthpiece from the lips and the mouthpiece repositioned the problem goes away.

Rasp sound might be the correct translation. Or just "buzz" as like buzzing your lips.

Otherwise I can understand you very well.

Raspberry is a manner of speaking Italian to distinguish the noise you make by joining the lips and make a noise equal to what they produce into the mouthpiece to her lips without insert it into the instrument, using an automatic translator certainly did not make what I wanted to explain. Hello, Colonel

If this occurs after practising a certain period of time, I'd suggest you just to take a break. A player should take lots of breaks when practising. Pedal tone exercises are another way to restore the lip. And remember not to use excessive pressure.

I'm sorry, I didn't get the raspberry metaphor :)

I have a problem in the issue of sound, after a while that I practice that happens to me I feel the vibrating upper lip but the note does not come out or go out like a small raspberry. May depend on what, there are specific exercises to prevent this from happening? Thanks to those who respond, Colonel
