As a trumpet player, I feel like I am lacking when it comes to sound quality and would like to know if anyone has some tips or exercises on how to improve. I know that general practice and long notes can help but I would like to know if there are any other methods that other trumpet players have used to improve their own.

Thanks in advance
-Noah Fraser

Forum category: Forum discussion / General discussion
Forum thread: Tone Quality

Hey! I would like to share some facts about resume writing. The resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. It convinces the employer that you have what it takes to be successful in this new position or career. To pass the employer’s screening process, to provide contact information: an up-to-date address and a telephone number, to have something to give to potential employers, your job-hunting contacts and professional references, to provide background information. Create titles that will catch the employer's eye, be genuine and confident with whatever you write in the resume.

Forum category: Forum discussion / Other discussion
Forum thread: Resume writing....

Hello there. Well my first trumpet has arrived. I play guitar very well and piano ok. I don´t read music properly. Should I wait to receive my first lesson before I get stuck in with the trumpet. I mean, am I gonna pick up bad habits? I intend to play some exercises from this site and some I got in iphone apps. Just to get started, you know? I had been shown many years ago by a teacher how to place an embouchure on cornet which I seem to have remembered ok and I have a good ear for tuning. So I am playing around trying to play a scale and make a nice fat tone. I don´t want to blag my way on this beautiful instrument and hopefully get my sightreading do a decent level. Thanks a lot and sorry if I ask a stupid question!

Forum category: Forum discussion / General discussion
Forum thread: Beginner waiting for lessons to begin.
Any tips what to do to get higher than Bb2 ? Should I play especially long notes and go f.ex. one tone higher every week? I have played brass instruments with lower scale and bigger mouth pieces before :) I know its important not to stress the lips too much even when going higher. Thanks for nice exercises too.

Forum category: Forum discussion / General discussion
Forum thread: Exercise to get higher on the scale?

Hi I'm new here but have been playing since I was 12 and I'm now much older… RE the use of low register to improve high register I think it is vital. According to one of my university trumpet teachers you use the same embouchure muscles to control the sound in low and pedal register that you do in the altissimo. I agree with jjs that you need to focus on all registers so that you have a powerful balanced sound everywhere on your horn.

Forum category: Forum discussion / Help requests
Forum thread: Question for you...

Hi and sorry about the late reply!

Yes, some say that the pedal tones are important when improving high register. Personally I think that it's important to gently expand your register in both directions but not by sacrificing the middle register tone quality. That's the register you'll mostly use anyway. Long tones are good for this. If you're interested in improving your high register, you might want to check out the Carmine Caruso -method.

I use pedal tones mostly for recovering when practising. They relax the lips nicely.

These are only my personal opinions and the best way is to study the different approaches and choose the one that works for you the best.

Forum category: Forum discussion / Help requests
Forum thread: Question for you...

Hi everybody! I have one question for you. Do you think that the pedal tones are very important for the development of the high register? First of all, JAMES STAMP book? Is there some other way (easier than J.Stamp) to get the high register?
I currently exercise this ''system'' but I'm interested if there is something else which might be better than this? What you think?

Big salute!!!

Forum category: Forum discussion / Help requests
Forum thread: Question for you...

Hi MeanSean!

Yes, this is correct. As you kind of stated in the title your post, the trumpet is a bb -tuned instrument (there are others, but this is the most common). Here's a quite good explanation: http://library.thinkquest.org/10693/Bb.html

So, if you play from a concert pitch sheet, you'll have to traspose everything a whole step up.

Forum category: Forum discussion / Help requests
Forum thread: Bb Trumpet

I just bought a used trumpet a week ago. I already play guitar quite well and I want to start playing a brass instrument. So I have been practicing about an hour or 2 a day and I have progressed quickly. So last night I went to jam with a keyboard player and I brought my trumpet along for kicks. On the pdf with all the note fingerings that is on this website it says that to play a C note, the position is open. I found that in-fact I was playing a Bb. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong?

Forum category: Forum discussion / Help requests
Forum thread: Bb Trumpet

Hello, I am a new member, my tongue is Italian but with the help of a translator I will follow you and follow the arguments that you have treated and dealt with subsequently.
I studied the trumpet from a clarinet teacher 47 years ago and I definitely got a lot of flaws. I played trumpet in the band also significant overlapping of roles I played lead trumpet in several orchestras and also Flügelhorn until the age of 30 years. Then I left for work missed anything from a few months I started to study assiduously, spurred by the fact that two of my grandchildren have started to study music, a trumpet and the other the piano, I play with them. I appreciate the effort and patience that you used to enter all this information in making your site public showings of your knowledge is truly a beautiful thing.
Hi all!

It's been a while so I thought I'd share some of my thoughts with you (does anybody read these?).

As some of you may know, this site is my thesis, or a part of it, as mentioned in the about -page. Well, I have now finished the report part of the thesis so from now on this site is just a hobby of mine. I've had some very encouraging comments about the site in other trumpet discussion forums and I will definitely keep adding the exercises whenever I have the time for it. As also mentioned in the about -page, my goal was to create the world's largest online trumpet exercise database and it still is. There aren't many of those so this could well be achieved (but not by sacrificing quality to quantity).

Unfortunately my time is limited so I'd like you to tell what kind of exercises would you like to see here? A while ago I added some major scale mode exercises and I'm planning to do similar exercises for the melodic minor scale modes. Also, there are none of minor ii-V patterns, that's also next on my todo -list. Adding some more of the major II-V exercises wouldn't hurt either (btw, would you like to hear the chord progressions behind the II-V -patterns? There could be two audio examples, with and without the accompaniment). There are also still some empty categories (etudes, chord arpeggios, etc.) that need to be started.

We have a nice amount of members here (growing by few members a week). Still, very few of you have added any exercises here but that's ok. I'll take your membership as a support for this site so keep on joining! That way I know that people really use this site. There's one thing that you could help though: there are many (native) english speakers as members so if you see any grammar errors (I'm sure there are!), please correct them if you have the time.

Forum category: Forum discussion / General discussion
Forum thread: Few thoughts

Ok, it's much easier to add a new exercise now. You don't have to worry about image widths, titles, their centerings or any other irrelevant matter, about everything is automated.

When you add an exercise, a new page will be created and already existing pages won't be edited. Therefore you are free to experiment — if something goes wrong, the page can be easily deleted and you can try again.

If you don't have a sound example for your exercise, it can be added afterwards by you or somebody else. You can add a new exercise here. If you have any questions, mail me.

Forum category: Trumpetexercises.net news / Announcements
Forum thread: Improved adding of an exercise
